17th International Architecture Exhibition

How will we live together?

from 22-05-2021 to 21-11-2021

The 17. International Architecture Exhibition by curator Hashim Sarkis tells the world of the near future. The countries and architects involved aim to invent and build new ways of living together, between borders, cultures, communities, but also between individuals themselves. We then think of the most inclusive theme: the one with the world that surrounds the human being and that includes nature and technology.

The two main sections:

Giardini

61 countries are participating with their pavilions at the Biennale. The main themes of the installations are the environment, borders, new communities and technology. Trying to find a solution to these issues, which is also an answer to the question of the title of this Biennale.

My favorites:

Denmark: the exhibition features an immersive installation, a giant cyclic system with water collected in Venice as the core element, connecting the pavillion's visitors and its surroundings.

Japan: the exhibition features pieces that were originally part of a typical japanese wooden house, awaiting demolition. In Venice, the parts from the dismantled house are used as components for new objects.

Spain: a cloud of portfolios that build up a repository of strategies for our living together.

Belgium: a selection of 45 contemporary Belgian projects of architecture depicts a healthy archtitectural ecology in which different styles, functions and typologies coincide.

Lithuania: A 3D scanner scans the partecipants of the experiment and creates a projection in outer space of an extraterrestrial planet mad of their bodies.

USA: a monumental installation on wood framing as the most common construction system in the US.

Great Britain: Drawing inspiration from The Garden of Earthly Delights, the exhibition invites visitors to engage debate around privatisation of public space in Britain today. Each room whithin the British pavillion presents a new model for the future of public space through an immersive installation.

Germany: via a series of films, the exhibition tells the story of our present, seen from the perspective of the year 2038, an era of "new serenity", in which everything will have turned out well. 2038 will be a virtual experience accessible from anywhere at any time, reconnecting with the physical space of the pavillion.

Nordic countries: a prototype of co-housing project that includes communal and private areas.

Switzerland: the physical reality of the Swiss border to its political and social issues, drawing a new perception for these inhabited territories.

Serbia

Peru: the project removed gates and fences from public spaces from many cities in Peru, the devices have been turned into benches and playground games. This way they rechanneled the expenses in creating barriers to new materials.

Uzbekistan

The installations were created in collaboration with experts and scientists from other fields, researchers from universities around the world, who try to give answers in a world where uncertainty reigns. The question in the title How will we live together? it was recognized by all as prophetic, even before the pandemic. Among the main themes there are also two thematic areas: Across Borders and As One Planet, present at the central pavilion.

4. Across Borders

- Transcending the Urban-Rural Divide

- Linking the Levant

- Seeking Refuge

- Resourcing Resources

- Protecting Global Commons

5. As One Planet

- Making Worlds

- Designing the Assembly of the Future

- Changing Designs for Climate Change

- Networking Space:

Arsenale

It consists of three macro areas: the relationship with nature, the help of science, the sense of community.

1. Among Diverse Beings

- Designing for New Bodies

- Living with Other Beings

2. As New Households

- Catering to New Demographics

- Inhabiting New Tectonics

- Living Apart Together

3. As Emerging Communities

- Appealing to Civicness

- Reequipping Society

- Coming Together in Venice

- Co-Habitats Here there is also the Italian pavilion which has as its theme resilient communities; and some of the nations.
