The squero is a small Venetian shipyard. Here boats, and mainly gondolas are produced and repaired. Reach Rio di San Trovaso and drink an aperitif at the Osteria Al Squero watching the artisans at work right in front of you. The art of producing gondolas is an art that with time we risk to lose. If once boats like these were the only means of transportation in the lagoon; today motor vehicles such as vaporettos and water taxis replaced them. But their romantic flavor makes them for a quiet journey along the canals for tourists and who want to enjoy a serenade lulled by the waves of the sea. A peculiarity of the squero of San Trovaso is its architecture. It is an exceptional case to find in the center of Venice such a clear example of mountain architecture, made of wood and with all the details of the houses of the Dolomites. The wood, as well as the shipwrights who made these small masterpieces were originally from Cadore.
